Michael Rooney, June McCormack & Music Generation Laois Harp Ensemble Japan Tour 2020
In August 2020, the Irish master harpist, Michael Rooney, who wrote music and performed for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, will first visit Japan! The legendary duo of Micael Rooney and the Irish flute player, June McCormack will perform! The student harp ensemble, who belongs to Music Generation, which is co-funded by the rock band U2, will perform in concerts! They will play Japanese and Irish traditional pieces in collaboration with a Japanese student harp ensemble and Japanese traditional musicians!

Music Generation Japan Team
Michael Rooney is a prolific composer and is widely regarded as one of the foremost players of the traditional Irish harp. Originally from Scotstown, Co. Monaghan and now a long time resident of County Sligo.
Michael was awarded the TG4 Composer of the Year in 2017. In May 2015, Michael was commissioned to write music and perform on the occasion of Prince Charles’ visit to Sligo. His music features on ‘The Queen’s Speech’, RTÉ’s documentary of Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Ireland.
June comes from Ballintogher, Co. Sligo. In 1998, June was presented with the Young Traditional Musician of the Year award by TG4 (Irish Language T.V. Channel).
A primary school teacher by profession, June has published two flute tutorial books in recent years, Fliúit (2006) and Fliúit 2 (2009). She has recorded two CDs with Michael Rooney; ‘Draíocht’ (2004) and ‘Land’s End’ (2006). She is a Musical Director at Fred Finn CCE in Sligo where 200 students take classes weekly.
Siobhan Buckley is a harper from Co. Cork, Ireland. As a soloist, Siobhan is a multiple prizewinner at the O’Carolan Harp Festival in Nobber, the ESB Feis Ceoil and at Fleadh Ceoil ná hÉireann where she won first place in the senior harp slow air competition in 2015. Siobhan has also performed for President Michael D. Higgins in Dublin Castle. Siobhan now leads 3 harp ensembles. Siobhan has travelled to New York, Spain, Monaco and Edinburgh with her ensembles to perform.
Currently, there are over 120 young people receiving weekly harp lessons with Music Generation Laois. They have established 3 different harp ensembles and a harp orchestra. On this tour, 7 young harpers will visit Japan.
